Russell Marwood, guests at this talk will soon deduce, is not from around here. A proud native of North Yorkshire he lived in the Northumbrian and then Viking capital of York for 60 years before finding himself living within shouting distance of the West Saxon capital of Winchester.

The highlight of Russell’s long career in archaeology was the discovery of the famous Coppergate helmet on May 12, 1982.

After 40 years in the trenches, he was handed the keys to small museum on York City walls based on the Wars of the Roses, and a set of keys for the City of York.

Russell is a keen Cricketer and umpires for Littleton CC. His other passions include wargaming and National Hunt horseracing.

The former brought Russell into contact with the Sealed Knot re-enactment society, and he rose through the ranks to become a lieutenant in the army of Parliament after 20 years. It is this part of his experience that drew him into doing talks like this evening with a repertoire that includes everything from the English Civil War to the Wars of the Roses, along with several battlefield walks and talks.

In this engaging and informal evening talk Russell will take you back to the 17th Century and bring to life the cut and thrust of the English Civil War.
